Think you know the truth about homelessness?

So many of the things we hear are myths that keep us from seeing the real picture and real people.

We’re here to bust common myths about homelessness with facts, compassion, and hope.

We’ll be updating this page regularly with new facts.

Stay tuned for the series, share what you learn, and help us spread understanding. Because together, we can end homelessness, helping one person at a time.

“Homelessness is a Choice” — FALSE!

This is a myth.

Affording a two-bedroom rental takes 71 hours of minimum wage work a week.

That’s nearly two full-time jobs, just to cover rent—before food, transportation, or childcare.

Housing costs and wages don’t match, and many people are just a single emergency away from losing their home.

“Addiction Causes Homelessness” — FALSE!

This is a myth.

Less than 5% report chronic substance use.

The real drivers are lack of affordable housing, job loss, medical debt, and domestic violence.

Addiction can happen to anyone, but it is not the cause of most homelessness.

“Homelessness Increases Crime In a Community” — FALSE!

This is a myth.

Rising criminalization of homelessness is driving an increase of hate crimes against these individuals.

People experiencing homelessness are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. Compassion and solutions, not stigma, make communities safer.

Take Action.
End the Stigma.

By challenging myths and replacing them with facts, we can all play a part in creating a more compassionate, informed, and solution-driven community.

Homelessness is a complex issue that requires collaboration, understanding, and collective action.

Together, we can move beyond stereotypes and toward real change, ensuring that every neighbor has the dignity and stability of a safe place to call home.

Let’s end homelessness, helping one person at a time.
